Synevyr is the largest mountain lake in the Ukrainian Carpathians, almost 1,000 m above sea level and surrounded by spruce forest. By bus it is a long trip with changes; by car it is a few hours on a scenic road. Here is how to drive there from Lviv, Uzhhorod and Ivano-Frankivsk, what the road is like and what entry costs.
Where Lake Synevyr is
The lake is in the Mizhhiria district of Zakarpattia, inside Synevyr National Nature Park, a few kilometres from the village of Synevyrska Poliana. From Mizhhiria it is about 30 km.
The lake covers 4–5 hectares and is more than 20 m deep at its deepest point. Swimming is not allowed. A path with wooden bridges runs around the water; a full loop takes about 40 minutes at an easy pace.
Driving to Synevyr from Lviv
About 220 km, 3.5–4.5 hours.
- Take the M-06 (Kyiv–Chop) through Stryi and Skole to Nyzhni Vorota.
- Turn there towards Volovets and Mizhhiria.
- After Mizhhiria, head for Synevyrska Poliana and on to the lake.
Near Volovets you can make a detour to Shypit Waterfall. Another route from Lviv goes through Stryi, Dolyna and Vyshkiv to Mizhhiria.
Driving from Ivano-Frankivsk
About 140 km, 2.5–3.5 hours. Go through Kalush to Dolyna, then take the R-21 over the pass near Vyshkiv to Mizhhiria and on to Synevyrska Poliana. The Dolyna–Mizhhiria section was recently resurfaced, but the hairpins on the pass are steep and get slippery in rain and in winter.
Driving from Uzhhorod
Take the M-06 through Mukachevo and Svaliava to Nyzhni Vorota, then go on to Volovets, Mizhhiria and Synevyrska Poliana. That is about 180 km and roughly 4 hours on the road.
What to know about the road
- From Synevyr village to the lake the road is narrow and potholed. Drive slowly: animals wander onto the verge, and in season there are tour buses.
- There are two car parks. The lower one is before the eco-barrier, with about 1.3 km to walk uphill. The upper one is right by the lake, but driving up costs more and at weekends it fills quickly. Come in the morning.
- In winter the passes get fog, ice and snow. You need good winter tyres; pack a brush, a shovel, a tow rope and a thermos.
- Mobile signal drops out in places. Download an offline map before you leave.

- Lake entry: from UAH 30 (children) to UAH 60 (adults).
- Lower car park: about UAH 50.
- Driving up to the upper car park: up to UAH 220.
- Brown Bear Rehabilitation Centre: about UAH 60, open 9:00–18:00.
What to see nearby
- Brown Bear Rehabilitation Centre: on the way to the lake, signposted on the right, then a 150 m walk. Bears rescued from circuses and private menageries live here.
- Shypit Waterfall near Pylypets: an easy stop if you come via Volovets.
- Kolochava: an old Zakarpattia village with open-air museums, not far from Synevyr.
- Wolf Valley eco-park in Synevyrska Poliana.
When to go
The lake is open all year. In autumn you get golden forest and morning mist; in winter, snow and quiet, though the road is harder. Summer is the busiest time, so at weekends set off early.
Driving to Synevyr with NarsCars
