At the last count of journalists, there are about 400 people all over the world. Who claim to be the creator of the very first car. But who has done more for the automotive industry? How did the car industry develop in one of the largest countries - the USA?
They are born in the United States
The first cars were named according to the names of the developers, which allowed the latter to quickly become famous. For more than a hundred years, many vehicle manufacturing companies have appeared in the American automobile market. Some of them have become international giants and are still active today. And others, for various reasons, flashed bright stars in the automobile sky and closed. The most significant of them were and still are:
- Ford.
- Chrysler.
- Lincoln.
- Dodge.
- Jeep.
- Cadillac.
- Chevrolet.
- Hummer.
- Imperial.
- DeSoto.
- Fargo.
- Mercury.
- Plymouth.
- Chalmers Automobile Chalmers.
- General Motors.
- Buick.
- GMC Truck.
- Pontiac.
- Tesla.
- Ram Trucks.
Initially, American car factories were focused on producing quality vehicles at affordable prices. Every day, about 10,000 cars leave the assembly lines of the country, which remain of high quality and affordable for everyone, like the first cars of Henry Ford. That is why American car brands are still leaders in sales.
Some car owners, when buying or renting a car, want to learn more about the brand and immerse themselves in the interesting and exciting world of automotive history. And this is not surprising - after all, each American brand has unique features of development, a long way to success and gaining popularity.
Milestones in the history of the American car industry
According to a study by automotive historian Scott Braley, John William Lambert, a resident of Ohio, who in the first half of 1891 designed a car with an internal combustion engine, won the laurels of a pioneer in the American automobile industry. The car had three wheels and a single-cylinder four-stroke engine. After successful tests, the inventor put his offspring up for sale at a considerable cost for that time - $ 550.
The official creator of the car is the German Karl Benz, since he was the first to receive a patent for the invention, the unspoken “father” of the automotive industry is still Henry Ford. It was thanks to him that the car turned from an expensive toy only for the rich into a public vehicle. In addition, Ford was the first to use sequential (conveyor) assembly of cars in its factories, which led to an increase in sales and, accordingly, profits.
Cadillac has twice received the British Royal Automobile Club's Dewar Award for excellence in the automotive industry. For example, the brand has been equipping cars with electric starters since 1911, and has also achieved complete interchangeability of parts. Unlike Ford's mass production, this brand was much more advanced, but it also cost 4 times more.
Unfortunately, many manufacturers have relied on the production of the most expensive and luxurious cars. For some time, such cars were in demand, but due to economic crises, sales, and then production, came to naught. Automotive owners failed to understand that times have changed and people need reliable, economical, inexpensive cars for daily use.
Until 1981, the United States held the palm in terms of production and sales of vehicles. Then Japan took the lead, and since 2009, China. Now America produces 8-10 million cars annually and firmly takes the place of the second manufacturer in the world. True, the focus has shifted from passenger cars to the production of pickups, SUVs and minivans.
American car legends
Thanks to the Americans, convertibles, muscle cars, huge coupes, luxury sedans and many other models appeared in the world, which are still appreciated by connoisseurs. The brightest representatives of the class of the most-most unambiguously are:
- The Cadillac Eldorado, which came to the car world in the late 1950s, strikes the imagination with its unusual space design. Kilograms of chromium, complex surfaces, an abundance of fins made the model a real classic;
- There are a lot of iconic models in Ford's fleet, but the Ford Model 18 is the first mass-produced vehicle equipped with an eight-cylinder engine. The model was made and sold until 1934, and now such machines are a huge rarity;
- The Ford GT40 was created to win at the Sarte circuit, which was supposed to push Ferrari cars from the first places of the podium. Albeit not immediately, but the machine completed its task. The model was a union of an extremely light chassis, a body made of complex materials and a powerful eight-cylinder engine. At the moment, the company is releasing the third generation of the model;
- A kind of challenge to the "Great Depression" was a luxurious, powerful and very expensive for that time model J car manufactured by Duesenberg. For its time, it was a model of luxury, and now all cars of this brand cost more than a million dollars;
- Willys MB, a light command SUV, has become a symbol of victory in World War II and the era as a whole. Despite the fact that it was created in an extremely short time, thanks to a well-thought-out design, low weight, high cross-country ability, the car gained wide popularity among the troops;
- despite the simplest technical design, the most American sports car of all time is definitely the Chevrolet Corvette. The model has gone through many restylings and is still being successfully produced;
- At the same time, the most famous car outside of America is the legendary Ford Mustang. The release of the model began in the mid-60s in the class of inexpensive sports cars. - The most important car for the global and American automobile industry remains the "Tin Lizzie" - the first, without exaggeration, popular, model Ford Model T. Appearing in 1908, it was inexpensive, had several body and color options, which was a revolutionary decision at that time. The production of cars continued until 1927;
- The first and main personification of the era of the appearance of electric cars is deservedly considered the Tesla Model S. Before this model entered the market, electric cars were extremely rare, were considered impractical, representing small cars with cheap interiors, a meager power reserve and an unreasonably expensive price;
- in the class of pickups, the palm belongs to the Ford F-250, which began to be produced in 1967 and continues to this day. The first copies had too much fuel consumption, but now the car has become much more economical;
- The iconic Chevrolet Bel Air Sport Coup was the first car to reach 100 km in 12 seconds. The model featured a unique appearance, but was discontinued in 1975;
- The Dodge Charger is recognized as the first designer muscle car, whose aggressive and ominous appearance made it very popular in Hollywood in the 1960s;
- One of the coolest station wagon family cars with a huge luggage compartment of 2400 liters is the Oldsmobile Cutlass Cruiser, which was launched in the 1970s. The car has become a symbol of "single-story America."
