In Ukraine, the condition of the road surface is a long-standing and big problem. It is proposed to solve it by building toll roads. This type of automobile "arteries" has long been used in many European countries and in the USA. The toll highway has a number of advantages and disadvantages. Let's look at them in more detail.
Benefits of toll roads
Road construction is an expensive undertaking. The cost of one kilometer of the highway can be tens and sometimes hundreds of millions of hryvnia. Therefore, attracting money from investors, and not from the state, is one of the main advantages of this type of road.
Funds received from car owners are used to maintain and repair the pavement, as well as to create roadside infrastructure. Self-sufficiency is the most important advantage of toll autobahns.
A feature of commercial highways is a more powerful coverage of good quality. Ordinary routes are covered with asphalt of a smaller thickness and can withstand cars weighing up to 25 tons, while paid analogues are designed for forty-ton trucks.
Along with self-sufficiency and good pavement quality, the advantages of these highways include:
- comfortable driving conditions;
- more lanes;
- good level of traffic safety;
- quality and timely service.
This type of road does not pass through large settlements. Therefore, the time to move a car from one point to another will be less than when driving on a normal highway. The presence of own services will accelerate the putting in order of the motorway.
On the disadvantages of toll roads
The main negative side of such highways is the need to pay for each kilometer. In Ukraine, the estimated fare on the concession highway can range from 0.75 to 4.20 UAH. The cost will depend on the weight of the car. The minimum price for 1 km will be for cars such as Ford Fiesta or VW Golf.
For example, the owner of Renault Logan II will pay about UAH 75-80 for a 100 km trip. Approximately the same amount will be laid out by the driver of the Citroen C-Elysee. A truck driver will pay UAH 410-420.
Another possible drawback of paid autobahns is the accumulation of cars at the entrance due to the collection of payment.
Ranking of countries with the largest number of toll roads
By the number of highways with tolls, the leader can be called the United States. There such routes were built for a long time. Of the European countries with a significant number of commercial roads, the following can be noted:
- France;
- Italy;
- Denmark;
- Austria;
- Spain.
Also, toll highways make up a significant share in such small countries as Serbia, Croatia and Slovakia.
Prospects for the development of the toll road system in Ukraine
In our country, the government plans to build six highways at the expense of investors. The list of concession routes looks like this:
- Kharkiv - Zaporozhye via the Dnieper (M29/M04/M18);
- Boryspil - Poltava (M03);
- Kherson - Nikolaev (M14);
- Kiev - Rovno through Zhytomyr (M06);
- Yagodin - Lutsk via Kovel (M08/M19);
- Dnieper - Nikolaev through Krivoy Rog (M04 / H11).
The listed routes are planned to be built by 2023. As it will be in reality, time will tell.
